We welcomed a glass student to our team at Daedalian Glass Studios in the past week. Marged is a student of Ba (Hons) Three Dimensional Design at the School of Art, Manchester Metropolitan University and has joined us for a short term internship.
The aim of this internship is to provide Marged with hands-on experience of working within the glass industry. Marged is confident in her abilities on the creative side of glass production but she wishes to develop an understanding of the technical and practical challenges faced by a working glass studio.
Whilst our founder, Davia Walmsley guides the making and designing; Marged was placed with studio technician, Imogen to collaborate on a glass design project. Imogen also studied at the School of Art, Manchester Metropolitan University and has since entered the industry with Daedalian Glass Studios.
This project is a cast glass panel, expanding on the theme of shells /crustaceans that the design team at Daedalian has recently been exploring for a superyacht project. This design is Imogen’s solo design work and will form part of the glass installation on exhibition at the Surface Design Show 2017.
So far, this project is at an early stage and Marged has been involved in helping to create the wax mould of Imogen’s design. This has involved wax pouring into silicon moulds and fettling the wax shells that have been created.
“I’m really enjoying working in a proactive environment and learning a range of skills from the design team at Daedalian Glass Studios. Imogen has guided me but also trusted me to work independently – which is really a worthwhile experience”
