In Profile – Keren Hulme – Sales & Marketing

Hi Keren, thanks for taking a few minutes out to chat, and let people get to know you a little. So first off, can you tell us a little about your background and previous work experiences.

So, before starting this job, I went to uni and got a degree in Forensic Science and Criminal Investigation. It was an eye-opening experience that really proved you shouldn’t believe everything you see on TV! The coursework was intense and detailed, covering everything from crime scene analysis to the intricacies of lab work. I learned a lot about the real-world applications of forensic science, which is much more methodical and less glamorous than it’s often portrayed in crime dramas.

After I finished my degree, I soon realised that chasing criminals wasn’t my calling. While the field is fascinating and the work is incredibly important, I discovered that it wasn’t for me. However, my studies were far from a waste. They provided me with lots of transferable skills that are valuable in any career. I developed strong analytical skills and the ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure. These skills have been incredibly useful in my current role and have helped me in the fast-paced work environment.

Sounds really interesting! Outside of work, what are your hobbies & interests?

Outside of work, I stay pretty busy with a few hobbies I enjoy. I take my boys to their football games and training, which is a great way to spend time with them and cheer them on. It’s always exciting to watch them play and improve their skills. If I’m not on the side-lines, I’m usually looking for new ideas to decorate the house because I can’t sit still for more than ten minutes. I love getting creative with home decor and finding new ways to make our space feel cozy and stylish.

I also enjoy reading, it helps me relax and keeps me learning new things. Whether it’s diving into a fascinating true crime book or enjoying an easy read, its a great way to unwind. Plus, I’m a sucker for a good love story! Between family activities, home projects, and my love for books, there’s never a dull moment!

So, obviously you have only been with us for a fortnight – what have your first impressions been?

My first impressions were really good! When I came in and sat down, the first person I actually spoke with was the lady who cleans the building. She asked me if it was my first day, and when I told her I was here for an interview, she started telling me about Daedalian. She shared how nice everyone is, reassured me not to worry, and asked me about myself, making me feel at ease straight away. Her warmth and friendliness immediately made me feel comfortable and gave me a positive impression of Daedalian!

She told me about the team at Daedalian, and how they are kind and supportive and it was clear she took pride in being part of the team. Her genuine enthusiasm made me feel so much better. I began to feel more confident about the interview.

When I met the rest of the team, everything she said was true. Everyone was incredibly welcoming and friendly, which made me feel right at home. Everyone went out of their way to make me feel welcome and confirmed that this was a place I wanted to be.

There is obviously a lot of specialist knowledge to learn, how are you finding your feet in the work of bespoke, decorative glass manufacturing?  Taking it all in?

Yeah, It’s been an interesting journey so far. It’s definitely a learning curve, but I’m really enjoying it. The team has been incredibly supportive and patient, which has made all the difference. Every day, I’m learning something new, whether it’s about the design process, different forms of glass, size and shapes, there’s a lot to learn!

I’ve been trying to soak up as much information as I can, asking lots of questions, and observing the more experienced team members. I’ve been spending time researching terminology and techniques, I’m getting the hang of it.

And you have been looking through our portfolio to familiarise yourself, do any of them stand out as a favourite?

I absolutely love York Racecourse VIP stand. The detail in it is incredible, and as someone new to this role, I can only imagine the hard work and time that went into creating such a large and well-designed project. The attention to detail is really impressive. It’s clear that a lot of effort and dedication went into every aspect, seeing this project has given me a deeper appreciation for the skill involved in bespoke decorative glass manufacturing!

York Racecourse was an amazing project, and a great example of multi depth etching!
