Shuttleworth College is located in Padiham, near Burnley in Lancashire, England. Daedalian Glass Studios was commissioned to design, manufacture, and install a translucent panel in a section of curved wall within the college’s faith room.
The brief was very clear – a glass window panel designed to pay tribute to the history and heritage of the local area.
Davia Walmsley of Daedalian Glass Studios spearheaded the design with full size drawings. Her design features shuttles that represent the local history as a weaving centre, the red rose of Lancashire, and figures of children all set against a backdrop of sunrises, sunsets, and stars.
Using 12mm low iron glass, the panel was kiln formed to create the texture and curve. Many of the design features were pre-formed glass components bonded to the surface of the panel, using techniques such as etching, fusing, and water jetted shapes. Finally, a surface coating technique was applied to make it into safety glass.
