Furness General Hospital is located in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England and is part of the Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. Opened in 1984, it replaced four local hospitals and is the second largest hospital in the South Cumbria / North Lancashire region.
Daedalian was commissioned by a private sponsor to create a piece of glass artwork for the patients at this hospital to enjoy.
The glass is designed by Davia Walmsley, lead designer at Daedalian Glass Studios. Its artwork is based on a 1400mm square panel of mirror, sandblasted on the front face leaving clear mirrored borders. The backlighting is arranged to illuminate only the fused glass elements.
The horse and carriage images are the family emblem of the artworks sponsor. The `Lakes` colour theme is a 10mm thick pane of fused glass bonded to the mirror face whilst above and below are squares of fused glass bonded to lengths of fused crystal rod.
